Vision Care Direct internal training and partner education hub

Discovery & Case History

Building trust through curiosity, solutions, and strategic conversations.

Purpose

The best Sales Directors are not "vision plan peddlers" — they are educators, consultants, listeners, and trusted advisors. This guide develops the skills needed to understand challenges, uncover frustrations, build trust, identify opportunities, and position Vision Care Direct as a strategic partner.

Core Sales Principle: "The person asking thoughtful questions controls the quality of the conversation."

The VCD Discovery Framework

Every discovery conversation follows five stages:

  1. Build Comfort — Lower defenses, create a conversational atmosphere, show genuine interest.
  2. Understand Their Current Reality — Learn how things currently work, identify frustrations, understand decision-making.
  3. Uncover Problems & Consequences — Discover pain points, understand emotional impact, quantify problems.
  4. Explore Goals & Opportunities — Discover what "better" looks like, identify unmet needs, position VCD naturally.
  5. Earn Permission to Continue — Avoid hard selling, gain trust for the next conversation, establish credibility.
Training Rule: Talk 30% of the time. Listen 70%. The more the stakeholder talks, the more trust develops, the more information is uncovered, and the more likely they are to emotionally buy in.

Question Banks by Audience

The full Discovery Question Guide includes tailored question banks for four audiences:

  • Brokers — Relationship-building, strategic discovery, and opportunity-creating questions.
  • Employers — Opening, employee experience, cost & strategy, and future-focused questions.
  • Doctors & Providers — Vision plan impact, patient experience, and trust-building questions.
  • Provider Staff — Operational, support, and rapport-building questions.

Active Listening Essentials

  • Maintain eye contact and take notes
  • Pause before responding — never interrupt
  • Ask thoughtful follow-up questions
  • Validate frustrations and show empathy
  • Never rush into presentations or pitch too early

Powerful Follow-Up Phrases

Instead of...Use this instead
"Let me tell you about VCD…""That's interesting — can you tell me more about that?"
"We can fix that.""It sounds like that's been frustrating for quite a while."
"Our plan is better.""That's one of the reasons many organizations are looking for alternatives today."

The Most Important Principle

"People rarely remember statistics, brochures, or features. They remember how the conversation felt, whether they felt heard, and whether they trusted the person sitting across from them. That is where VCD has the opportunity to differentiate itself."
